Purple Majesty

I’ve been waiting for this moment for two years.

They were not open this morning, but as I pulled into the driveway about an hour ago, I could see that brilliant purple.

Awe.  Like first time you see that fledgling sprout push its way through the soil.

In fact,  I gasped.

Beautiful purple irises.

I wish I could tell you their specific name, but I have no clue.

They are majestic no matter what their official name may be.

After The Rain

With all the negativity in the news these days I thought I would create something that speaks to beauty and love.  And it is almost spring.  A time to celebrate renewal and color!

I shot most of this video while walking my dogs around the neighborhood…it’s where I get lots of inspiration for color schemes!   The spanish moss shot is from a recent trip to Savannah, and that soft, white, fluffy rug is from Home Goods.  Honest Stephielou.

The short video is a twist on one of my favorite songs from one of my favorite movies this year, La La Land.  Hope it inspires you to see the beauty around you.

Hawaiian Dreamin’

Decorating or design in a home isn’t just about making things pretty. It’s about creating that space that you connect to.

The place that makes you feel good. Peaceful. Home.

This family in Cary North Carolina reached out to me late this summer when they decided that they were ready to bring that sense of peace they loved in Hawaii to their home in North Carolina. It’s an ongoing project, but I’m impatient and just had to share how it’s going.  I hope you will watch and get inspired. Is there a room in your place that could use a second look?

“Live and die, we’re the same.”

“Live like a Pharaoh, sing like a sparrow anyway.  Even if there is no land or love in sight.”

-The Avett Brothers, “Live and Die”

Think about it.  I know I had to.   Not only are those Avett Brothers talented musicians and incredibly good-looking, but they are wise, too.  That’s why they are this week’s choice for Wednesday Words of Wisdom.    What I take from above line from their song, “Live and Die”  is this:  Grab life and live it as best as you can.  Until you die. No matter what comes your way.

That works for me.

It is also what propels me to create a home that provides that lift, that anchor that renews my spirit and just makes my life better.  Imagine if we all took care of our space like our lives depended on it.  I think there just might be many more happier people in the world.

Do you remember that chandelier I found at ReStore Habitat for Humanity a couple of posts ago?

Here it is in the Cary ReStore location, a diamond in the rough.

Well, I hung it up in the master bedroom at last!  Miracles do happen.

Still need to finish painting the rest of the trim,  but here’s what the space looked before I replaced this not-so-lovely and kind-of-boring light fixture (aka nipple light).

I still need to finish painting, but here it is!

Closer view.

The house is always a work in progress.  The work is in finding the things that bring you joy and eliminating the stuff that doesn’t.

And now, without further ado, I bring you The Avett Brothers!

Oh and Avett Brothers, in case you see this…

thank you. ❤

Raleigh Reclaimed

In the 1950’s, tobacco barns were a huge part of the landscape in North Carolina.  About half million of them were scattered throughout the state.   Drying tobacco was  big business in those days.

Today that number has dwindled to 50,000.  Even in my area, I’ve seen more than a few crumble into themselves or die at the hand of a bulldozer.  And it makes me sad.

Thankfully, some of these historic structures are being reclaimed by artisans like Josh and Billy of Raleigh Reclaimed.  I stopped in on Tuesday with a client to pick out some beautiful wood for a home office and living room.   My clients will have a piece of history in their home, not to mention a very warm, cozy space to enjoy with their family and friends.

I wasn’t expecting this to happen, but I knew enough to know they were in sync.

Wait for it.  ❤️
